There has been a belief floating around claiming average people are happier than intelligent individuals. As far back as Ernest Hemingway’s day when he stated finding an intelligent person who is happy is a very rare thing, this statement has been circulating. One contributing factor to this statement is the intelligent person is more aware of their world and worry about how it is being cared for. This worry may, however; be just one excuse and not a real reason. Six possible reasons might explain why smart people are not as happy as the average person.
1. Intelligent People Have Higher Standards
Intelligent people will find it harder to achieve satisfaction in every area of their life. They know what they seek in life and will not settle for less. This idea means no matter what state their relationships are in or what achievements they have reached, they will continue to expect better. A person identified as intelligent has a brilliant and theoretical mind. This type of mind tends to leave them with a less practical intelligence and has them seeing the world through an idealistic view. This view will fall short on their high standards when the reality of life is realized as it causes them to become unhappy.
2. Intelligence Doesn’t Allow Relaxation
Intelligent people continue to seek better and bigger results. They will continue to search for a meaning, purpose, or pattern to an event even if an entirely logical solution has been presented to them. This type of person doesn’t stop to relax and accept situations in their life as they believe there is more. An intelligent person will expect and crave things to be fantastic, eternal, and idealistic. When these events don’t measure up to what they expect, they cannot find happiness.
3. High IQs Have Been Linked To Psychological Problems
High IQs have been linked to bipolar personalities and social anxieties. Even those persons with high IQs who have not been diagnosed with one of these psychological problems are still at risk for existential depression. Existential depression is most often a result of a person thinking too much. They spend too much time reflecting on death, life, and the meaning of our existence. These thoughts then lead them to a state of depression.
4. Intelligent People Find It Hard To Connect With Others
When you find someone that you truly connect with, you feel a sense of peace and happiness. You are able to spend time with this person who shares your beliefs, passions, and interests. They are someone on your same level of thought that you can communicate with on any subject and are always be there for you as mental support. An intelligent person will find it almost impossible to find an intellectual equal. When they cannot find someone who shares their views on the world and can communicate with them on their level, they feel very alone.
The intelligent person will even find it difficult to socialize as they are not interested in talking about the typical, average ideas such as weather, food, or what people do in their spare time. The intelligent individual is going to want to talk about subjects of their interest which are much too deep for the average person to want to engage in. When they cannot find compatible, social contacts it will make them lonely and unhappy.
5. Intelligent People Tend To Be Too Strict
Those with high IQs tend to expect more of themselves and are strict in achieving their goals. They will over analyze everything they do and always find themselves falling short on what they believe they are capable of performing. A person who consistently finds themselves inadequate cannot be happy. Intelligence seems to make people over analyze their own behavior in such a strict manner, they always find fault in themselves. It appears in some that they intentionally seek situations where they can find blame in their actions.
6. Intelligent People Overthink
People with high IQs drain themselves with thinking. They allow their thought process to take them to frustrating and undesirable conclusions which develop depression or individual unhappiness. There is a saying that ignorance is bliss which can certainly be true. When a person is able to be their true self and more carefree, they are able to find happiness. When the intelligent person continues to overthink global issues, life’s dilemmas, and other philosophical issues it can only lead to unhappiness.
